HUMMER EV’s CrabWalk Mode Explained

If you picture a vehicle scuttling sideways down the street when you hear the words “CrabWalk Mode,” you’re not too far from the truth. However, the HUMMER EV is designed too expertly for its driving dynamics ever to be called scuttling, no matter which direction it’s driving. This innovative driving system allows the HUMMER EV to drive diagonally, similar to a CrabWalk.

How CrabWalk Works

CrabWalk mode is a 4-wheel steering system. Under normal circumstances the front wheels turn in order to steer the vehicle. In CrabWalk mode, the rear wheels turn as well, matching the angle of the front wheels by up to 10 degrees depending on your vehicle. With both sets of wheels turning, your vehicle will be able to move diagonally.

How CrabWalk is Useful

Imagine being able to simply glide into a parallel parking spot with one simple turn. With CrabWalk, it’s possible. The 4-Wheel Steering system is great for getting in and out of tight spaces when you’re traveling offroad or even down narrow urban streets. It can also help you navigate around objects that would otherwise have been within your turning radius.

How to Turn on CrabWalk

To use CrabWalk, make sure you’re not traveling above 1.2 mph, which is considered crawl speed. Make sure the wheel is stationary and that the Super Cruise is off. Then, follow the three steps below to turn to use CrabWalk on your properly equipped HUMMER EV.

1. Press and hold the 4-Wheel Steering button on the Driver Mode Control Dial until the infotainment screen shows CrabWalk ready.
2. An animation will display on the infotainment screen when CrabWalk engages.
3. HD Surround Vision will activate to show you your surroundings. You can now travel up to 20 mph while Crabwalk is active.

To turn CrabWalk off, simply press the 4-wheel steering button a second time.
