GM Super Cruise FAQ

GM Super Cruise: Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

A future where hiring a chauffeur is as simple as choosing the right GM vehicle isn’t far away. While the latest upgrades to the automotive giant's long list of technological feats made it the first to bring hands-free driving to U.S. drivers, we’re still a few years away from being able to plot a course and completely disengage with the task of driving. However, you can use both hands to chow down on your mid-road-trip double-decker burger. Just make sure you’re driving a Super Cruise-enabled GMC or Buick vehicle on compatible roads. If you’re not familiar with Super Cruise and all that it has to offer, keep reading for a breakdown of the most commonly asked questions, then visit the Jim Taylor Buick GMC dealership in Monroe, LA.

What is Super Cruise, and how does it work?

In a nutshell, Super Cruise is a hands-free driving system that uses LiDAR mapping, GPS, cameras, and radars to provide you with a driving experience that feels like it's straight out of a sci-fi movie. When Super Cruise is fully enabled, you’ll be able to take your foot off the accelerator and remove your hands from the steering wheel. The driver assistance system will monitor the lane markings to keep your vehicle centered in the lane. And once you’ve set a speed, it will monitor the distance between you and the vehicle ahead to balance the tasks of maintaining a safe following distance and the speed you’ve set.

Do I have to keep watching the road?

As mentioned earlier, technology hasn’t quite reached the stage where you can take a nap behind the wheel. You’ll need to remain alert and keep your eyes on the road for Super Cruise to work properly. The system includes a Driver Attention Monitoring feature to ensure that you do. If it detects that you’re no longer watching the road, it will notify you with a visual and audible alert three times before slowing down and bringing the vehicle to a complete stop.

Where does Super Cruise work?

Super Cruise currently works on over 240 million miles of roadway in the United States and Canada. There isn’t a single mainland state that doesn’t have Super Cruise-capable roadways. As of right now, drivers here in Monroe, LA, can use Super Cruise on several major highways, including:

  • Interstate 20
  • County Road 15
  • Route 165

Every year, more highways and roadways are added to the Super Cruise network. Soon, you’ll be able to travel through West Monroe, Richwood, DeLoach, and other nearby communities as well.

Are there any places where I shouldn’t use Super Cruise?

Super Cruise should not be used during inclement weather that may obscure the view of the cameras, on roads with unclear lane markings, in construction zones, or when the roads are slippery.

How do I use Super Cruise?

Using Super Cruise is a simple three-step process.

  1. Enable Adaptive Cruise Control. While you are using adaptive cruise control, the Super Cruise system will monitor your environment and let you know when all of the Super Cruise requirements are met. When they are, your Super Cruise icon will light up in white.
  2. When it’s safe, press the Super Cruise button on your steering wheel and wait for the light bar to turn green.
  3. When the light bar is green, it’s safe to remove your hands from the wheel, relax, and enjoy your hands-free driving experience.

What services do I need to use Super Cruise?

In addition to a vehicle with Super Cruise equipment, you’ll need an active OnStar Super Cruise subscription to use the feature. You’ll also need to ensure that your Forward Collision System is on and that it has been set to ALERT AND BRAKE. If you use Teen Driver technology, make sure you turn off all features before you attempt to use Super Cruise.

Does Super Cruise work on Buick models?

Yes. If you’re a fan of Buick vehicles, you’ll be happy to learn that the 2025 Buick Enclave is the first Buick model to sport GM Super Cruise capabilities, and other models will soon follow.

Which GMC models are available with Super Cruise?
