Which Warranty Comes With a Used Vehicle at Jim Taylor Buick GMC?
“Does it come with a warranty?” is the first question most people ask about a used vehicle, and the honest answer at our store is “it depends on which one you are looking at.” That is not a dodge. Two Terrains parked next to each other on N 18th Street can carry completely different coverage depending on age, mileage, and whether they went through certification.
This post lays out the four layers of coverage a used vehicle at Jim Taylor Buick GMC can carry, from remaining factory warranty through CarBravo and the Jim Taylor Assurance Warranty to optional service contracts, so you know what to ask before you make an offer.

What are the four layers of used-vehicle coverage?
Remaining factory warranty, CarBravo certified coverage, the Jim Taylor Assurance Warranty, and an optional service contract. Which ones a vehicle carries depends on its age, mileage and whether it was certified.
| Layer | Who backs it | What it covers | Which vehicles |
|---|---|---|---|
| Remaining factory warranty | GM | Whatever is left of the original new-vehicle bumper-to-bumper and powertrain coverage | Newer, lower-mileage GMC and Buick vehicles |
| CarBravo certified | GM, honored at 4,000+ GM dealerships | 12-month/12,000-mile bumper-to-bumper, no deductible, starting after factory coverage ends (BravoBudget: 30-day/1,000-mile powertrain) | Under 10 model years and under 100,000 miles (BravoBudget: 10 to 15 years and/or 100,000 to 150,000 miles) |
| Jim Taylor Assurance Warranty | Jim Taylor Auto Group | 3-month/3,000-mile limited powertrain: engine, transmission, transfer case, drive axle; towing reimbursement up to $125; rental assistance for overnight repairs; no deductible | Eligible used vehicles under 10 years old with under 140,000 miles |
| Optional service contract | The contract provider | Varies by plan; purchased separately | Any used vehicle the plan accepts |
Think of it as a floor and a ceiling. The Jim Taylor Assurance Warranty is the floor: the coverage an eligible used vehicle gets even when it is not certified. CarBravo sits above it, broader and longer. Factory warranty is a bonus only newer vehicles have, and a service contract is the option you can add on top.
How much factory warranty is left on a used GMC or Buick?
It depends on the in-service date and the odometer. GM’s original bumper-to-bumper coverage runs 3 years or 36,000 miles from the day the vehicle was first sold, and the factory powertrain warranty runs longer, so a two- or three-year-old vehicle often has real coverage remaining.
The in-service date is the number to ask for, because it is not the model year. Two vehicles with the same year on the window sticker can be a year apart on warranty, and we can pull that date for any GMC or Buick on the lot in a minute.
Factory warranty transfers with the vehicle at no cost, so this layer is pure upside, and it is why a newer used Acadia or Envision is worth more than the price gap alone suggests.
What does CarBravo certification add?
A 126-point inspection with repairs to GM’s standard, a 12-month/12,000-mile Bumper-to-Bumper Limited Warranty with no deductible that begins when any remaining factory warranty expires, a 10-day/500-mile exchange, roadside assistance, courtesy transportation, and a free CARFAX report.
On a certified two-year-old Sierra, you get the rest of the factory warranty first, then CarBravo’s 12 months and 12,000 miles after it. On a certified seven-year-old Enclave with no factory coverage left, CarBravo starts the day you buy. Either way, it is honored at more than 4,000 GM dealerships and covers far more than the powertrain.
Vehicles 10 to 15 model years old and/or between 100,000 and 150,000 miles can be certified at the BravoBudget tier, with a 62-point inspection and a 30-day/1,000-mile Powertrain Limited Warranty instead. The full terms, including what CarBravo does not cover, are in our post on what the CarBravo warranty actually covers.
What is the Jim Taylor Assurance Warranty?
A dealer-backed limited powertrain warranty included on eligible used vehicles. It runs 3 months or 3,000 miles, whichever comes first, and covers the engine, transmission, transfer case and drive axle on used vehicles under 10 years old with under 140,000 miles.
It also includes towing reimbursement up to $125 and rental assistance when a covered repair keeps the vehicle overnight. A tow from the far side of Sterlington is not cheap, and rental assistance means a two-day repair does not cost you two days of work.
Be clear about what it is not. It is a powertrain warranty, so the air conditioning, the electronics and the power seats are not part of it. It is shorter than CarBravo, and it is backed by us rather than by GM, so the place that honors it is our service department rather than a national network. If the used vehicle you are looking at is not certified, this is the coverage to ask about, and the full terms are on our Jim Taylor Assurance Warranty page.
When does an optional service contract make sense?
When you plan to keep the vehicle well past the end of its included coverage, and when it has enough expensive equipment that a single repair would hurt. It is the one layer you pay extra for, so it deserves an honest cost-versus-risk conversation.
Where it tends to make sense: a certified Yukon Denali with air suspension and a full technology package that a family intends to drive for eight years, or a non-certified Sierra with the Assurance Warranty that tows every weekend. Three months of powertrain coverage is a short runway on a truck that works that hard.
Where it usually does not: a two-year-old certified Encore GX with factory coverage still running and CarBravo behind it, for a buyer who trades every three or four years. Ask what the plan covers, what the deductible is, and where repairs can be done, and decide with those answers in hand. Our overview of certified pre-owned GMC and Buick vehicles in Monroe explains where certification fits.
How do I know which coverage applies to the vehicle I want?
Ask. Every used vehicle on our lot has one specific set of coverage, and any salesperson at Jim Taylor Buick GMC can tell you which it is and show you the paperwork before you make an offer.
Three questions cover it. Is this vehicle CarBravo certified, and at which tier? How much factory warranty is left, based on the in-service date? If it is not certified, does it qualify for the Jim Taylor Assurance Warranty? The price should make sense against the answers.
One thing we will not do is tell you the Assurance Warranty extends or adds to a certified vehicle’s coverage. A certified vehicle carries CarBravo; an eligible non-certified vehicle carries the Assurance Warranty. If you are comparing a certified vehicle here with one from an online retailer, our post on buying certified in Monroe versus an online used-car retailer puts the warranties side by side.
Key Takeaways
- Four possible layers: remaining factory warranty, CarBravo, the Jim Taylor Assurance Warranty, and an optional service contract.
- CarBravo certified vehicles get a 12-month/12,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty with no deductible, starting after any factory coverage ends.
- The Jim Taylor Assurance Warranty is a 3-month/3,000-mile limited powertrain warranty on eligible used vehicles under 10 years old with under 140,000 miles.
- Ask for the in-service date; it tells you how much factory warranty is left.
- Always ask which coverage applies to the specific vehicle before you make an offer.

My take on used-vehicle warranties
The buyers who end up frustrated are almost never the ones who bought a vehicle with less coverage. They are the ones who thought they had more than they did. I would rather our people spend five minutes at the desk explaining which layer applies to which vehicle than have you find out in the service drive.
Come by Jim Taylor Buick GMC in Monroe, pick the vehicle you like, and ask us the three questions above. We will answer all three before you ever see a number.
